David Haney grew up in Calgary, Canada, studied piano at age eight, adding guitar at 15. He studied composition in Portland, with Czech-American composer Tomas Svoboda. In 1980, David began performing with featured jazz artists in a modern compositional setting. His early works were performed on several occasions by the Society of Oregon Composers. He has received six commissions for film, the Oregon Ballet Theatre, and from private individuals. In 1997 David began touring internationally performing and recording with such artists as: Andrew Cyrille, Julian Priester, Roswell Rudd, Bud Shank, John Tchicai , Han Bennink, Buell Neidlinger, Gerry Hemingway, Wolter Wierbos, Obo Addy, Wilbert de Joode and Adam Lane.

 

A sometimes frequent performer in Canada and the U.S. West Coast, past tour highlights have included:  Porgy and Bess, Vienna, Austria; BLAJAZZ, Oslo, Norway; Teatro Colon, Buenos Aires; 2nd International Festival de Jazz, Valparaiso, Chile; The Knitting Factory, New York; Yoshi's, Oakland, CA; The Western Front, Vancouver, Canada; The Calgary International Jazz Festival, Calgary, Canada; The Yardbird Suitem Edmonton, Canada; Pacific Rim Chamber Music Festival.
